Ray Stevens: The Streak Original 45 RPM Record

Stevens’ The Streak. I think this is the original publication, but I’m not sure. Either way, it was made by Barnaby Records and distributed by Janus Records. This record is from ‘74. The B-Side does not match what Wikipedia says it should be–It’s You’ve Got the Music Inside and Wikipedia says it should be Smith and Jones–but I think it still could be an original since it’s from ‘74. It is played on my Zenith Console (model # unknown) with a replacement (but still BSR) changer. Please …

Was this 45 version (which I have) recorded live, and if so what show was it from?

no, the song wasn’t recorded live. this was during the era of the electronic laugh track. Ray’s comical recordings contain laugh tracks as did a lot of sit-com’s from the ’60s and ’70s because doing live albums were too expensive. In the 1990’s when he had his theater open in Branson, Missouri he recorded a few songs at his theater: “The Bricklayer’s Song” and “If Ten percent Is Good Enough For Jesus”. Those songs are on his CLASSIC RAY STEVENS album from 1993.

“Along Came Jones” and “Gitarzan” are perfect examples of where a listener can tell laugh tracks are being used because Ray’s performing all of those voices and they’re over-lapping each other…like at the end of “Gitarzan” where he, Jane, and the Monkey all sing at the same time. When he performs the song in front of an audience he slips from one voice to another…all the voices aren’t heard at once like they are in the recording.

“Bridget the Midget” is by far the best use of the electronic laugh track…here you have a song that’s a spoof of burlesque houses and go-go dance clubs complete with emcee and a deranged hippie-like groupie. Ray can’t sing like a chipmunk naturally…his voice is sped up on the recording when singing the part of Bridget. However, you’ll hear the live atmosphere and the hollers and cheers, etc etc.

“The Dooright Family”, a song I did a video montage of earlier today, contains the laugh track

I think the laugh track is okay…some have the opinion that they’re dishonest…I happen to have a different opinion. I think they compliment the recording…imagine watching “Night Court” without the laugh track…it would still be funny but it would feel cold without the laughter in the background. Ray’s songs are still comical without a laugh track…but laughter is contagious they say and it enhances a comedy song.

Thanks. The Streak reached number one in the UK for one week in June 1974. It’s fair to say that any artist who can write songs as diverse as Everything Is Beautiful and The Streak can be described as at least versatile!

My question was in reference to a story that one of the commentors brought up, not to the song.

It is an original. Barnaby was originally distributed by MGM until switching distribution to Janus about 1973.

The original picture sleeve had both the Janus and Chess logos (both were controlled by GRT at the time) but had he Barnaby label (which is seen within the Janus “JR” logo).

Women who streak are mentally ill whores! I want my daughter to be drugged & put onto government money because she streaked once! Streakers are sick! Me & my big bud bro Sterl get videos of streakers & sell them for money. We like to buy a lot of coins from the home shopping network with the money. Amy Videla’s babies need money for diapers. They poop every 2 minutes.
