Melancholy Galliard – Renaissance Lute

Posted by admin on Dec 8, 2009 in Uncategorized |

of Queen Elizabeth I. This piece of music is played on a ‘hired’ lute from the ‘Lute Society’(UK). Apologies for all the background noise. Hopefully the crackling fire covers up most of my mistakes, as well as adding that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ of course! :-) See my other Lute Video: search for ‘Mudarra Fantasia’ & ‘alan lowe-jones’. Hi, welltuned. Haha, that’s realy very funny. I couldn’t believe my bad luck when recording this piece; the fire started crackling at such an inopportune moment. That’s burning willow for you. You have some excellent videos by the way: Edith Piaf, Paul Odette, French Baroque Trio, Ipernot etc.
    Kind regards.
    Alan.

The lute is not the easiest of stringed instruments I took lesson with Rob Mckillop of edinburgh uni (Renaissance lute 6course) and it took a while to get over the basics I was a guitar player beforehand and it’s about readapting the brain to know which is which on the fingerboard. But a very challanging and fun instrument

I’ve been at the Baroque repertoire for a while now and your video inspired me to pull out the Renaissance lute and play. How cool is that?

There are some very cool videos on YouTube (including yours), that’s for sure.

Not a bad idea..electric lute. You all think that studying and learning some of this renaissance lute music could help me with metal(probobly or at least partly neo-classical)electric guitar?

kind of looks like a derivative of the middle eastern oud

  • 0pteryx says:

The European Lute is a modified version of the Oud brought to Europe by the Arabs during the middle ages.

how can such a beautiful sound emanate from such an ugly boat paddle of an instrument

it sounds like a really nice classical guitar

    lol :D

anyway its really moody. lute was a quite popular instrument in my country, hungary too in the 16-17th century and played important role in hungarian folk music, so it sounds really familiar to me. great job!

  • teresalopezm says:

ahhh but it does and just imagine what a masterfully crafted lute in its time and prime woulda sounded like!!!

  • kreepykrawlie says:

Sounds wonderful! However, you look like you’d be more at home playing on a rock in the middle of a calm lake on a misty morning! At least that what the music makes me think of.

  • kreepykrawlie says:

Try looking for the artist Paul O’Dette. He has some pretty amazing lute recordings!

  • salixarbour says:

    Hi, KreepyKrawlie.
You’re right, Paul O’Dette is a wonderful, proper, lute player. Quite unlike myself; I’m just some bod having a play! :-)
    Best wishes.
    Alan.
