Take a TESOL or a CELTA course. 2. Get some ESL teacher texts from a bookstore and read them. 3. Volunteer to tutor at your university’s International Students Center. 4. Volunteer to tutor at a local school (you may need a criminal background check). 5. Do online research…Google is a wonderful thing. Warning: Avoid the forums at ESL Cafe…the trolls are vicious and always hungry for new meat! … south korea japan taiwan china teach teacher esl tesol english busankevin teaching efl …

Thanks! I’m still waiting on placement. I’m holding out hope that I’ll end up in a big city, but bracing myself for the boondocks.

Your videos are awesome by the way!

  • BusanKevin says:

Glad you’ve been enjoying my vids. From what I hear about JET, you never know what part of Japan you might be placed. Hope it’s somewhere cool. Even the boondocks would be cool….just think how quickly you’ll be able to develop your language skills! When you live in a big city, and there’s lots of English around, it can be easy to get lazy with Japanese…..like me! :(

Very much enjoying all of your stories…. I do just have one quick question… DId you ever make contact with the Korean speed skating coach after the TV show? Just wondering! Hope you’re having a good day :)

Great story! I’m a bit apprehensive about teaching as well. I’ve never had any experience teaching (I had a little tutoring) and when I go to Japan, I’m almost positive that’s the only job I’ll be able to start out doing. Keep up the great videos and stories! :)

Hey Kevin, thanks for the videos about your experience in Korea. I’m half way to getting hired by a company thats going to take me to Korea to teach. I never studied Education but I have worked in schools for about 5 years. I also have some Korean friends I met here in NYC. Thanks again for the vid about your 1st day and I hope to keep in touch with you here on youtube. Hasta luego amigo.

  • BusanKevin says:

Tanks for watching. Good luck with the new job,. Having already been a teacher, things should be no problem for you :)

  • dagga18 says:

The story was hilarious :D especyally the part where she gives you the basket with all the stuff. I was wandering does only native english speakers get hired for these kind of jobs? How is it in Japan?

  • BusanKevin says:

Not really sure ho wit is here. I’m now an experienced and well trained teacher. My school has only experienced people. I’m sure it happens in some schools though…like in my story.

  • lateblossom says:

Very good story. Good luck being a teacher, and God bless.

  • subwalady says:

Sounds almost exactly like my first day! Only, 6 weeks after I finally got used to everything and the students knew me and I was just getting settled, the kindergarteners graduated and I got a nice new bunch of 2 and 3 year olds who barely spoke Korean, none-the-less English. I’m like you, I’ve grown to love it though!

  • angstfornothing says:

I am leaving in one week to start a similar position in Seoul. Can you recommend specific ESL teacher texts I should get for that age group?

  • BusanKevin says:

I can tell you about some brilliant website….

    my favorite kindergarten resource is:
    mes-english(dot)com

  • purphanz says:

    did you teach before korea?

  • BusanKevin says:

nope. Korea was my first time. ended up being there for more than 5 years before becoming a teacher in Canada :)

  • hoangh123 says:

wow im only 16 and kind of looking to find a path in life and i found one!

does it matter if im asian? well as u said in one of ur other videos and from what i know of korean they are a image based country…
would they rather choose a caucasian?
