StudentScholarships.org – Animation as a Career

Posted by admin on Dec 18, 2009 in Uncategorized |

As a little girl, I was always interested in animated films. I just couldn’t wait to go see the next big Disney film, or wake up and watch Sunday cartoons at seven in the morning, much to my mother’s horror. I guess I never grew out of it really. My heart races when I see a new announcement about another animated film, and I still like to go to the movie theater to watch some wacky, comical adventure. Perhaps that’s what attracts me the most; the sense that anything and everything can happen in animation.

The summer of my sophomore year, I received a scholarship and went to SCAD or the Savannah School of Art and Design for a week long camp. You had your choice of two workshops; luckily, I got into the 2-D animation program. While painting turned out to be less of a horror than I imagined, I found that I absolutely loved animation. From the first moment I stepped into the classroom, a sense of overwhelming awe overtook me, a sense that I could seriously see myself as an animator for the rest of my life.

When the week drew a close, my newly made friends and I said our goodbyes and I left Savannah. However, one thing remained; my love of animation. Only now, I knew how to do it! I felt I could climb to the highest tower, reach leaps and bounds, create fully featured films that everyone would gasp in wonder at. Then, junior year hit me with a pile of homework that I found myself smashed under. More important issues kept popping up, and I had to put my dream of animation on hold.

This summer was a blessing. It was the first time that I got a true look at college. I’ll admit, I’ve been a little afraid of that word, but now, I’m ready! All of the opportunities, all of the experiences, all of the fun can only come from one place—college. It’s a place where one can indulge themselves in their true passions. A place that one can be and feel it is as unique as they want to be.

My goal is to become a great animator, perhaps one of the greatest. But, I do not yet have the tools or the knowledge to reach my goals. College is the best opportunity—perhaps the only opportunity—for me to reach those goals. For through knowledge does one truly achieve greatness.
